Terrorists attempt to spread a terrible virus throughout the world. Dr. Noah Haldane has been expecting such an attempt so he, along with some other medical experts are looking for it. ARCS, Acute Respiratory Collapse Syndrome, turns up in Hong Kong, sending Dr. Haldane with several other medical experts to that area of the world. Dr. Gwen Savard is the Department of Homeland Securities Director of Counter-Bioterrorism, a newly created position. She is in the process of getting a divorce from her husband, Peter. Her feelings are torn, not believing this is actually occurring. But at this time, she has too much on her mind fighting this new super virus to think of her separation from Peter.

This is a MUST read book for any war buffs. I eat up any good information I can get concerning WW II as I was born seven-years before it started. I still remember today hearing as a seven-year old the terrifying words that came over the radio on December 7 1941 as I was with my parents at a family party in Pittsburgh, Pa.

I watched the televised “Band of Brothers” when it appeared on HBO several years ago and at that time I knew I had to read the book written by Mr. Ambrose. The book goes into much more detail while keeping that detail very interesting. The entrance of the men of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne into the military, mostly around the start of the war, is told from their own words and words of their co-military men. The intense training they went through is what got them through the ferocious battles they fought and somewhat prepared them for the many wounds and awareness of the big possibility of death of them and those all around them. There was tremendous loss of life and many badly wounded throughout the course of their jump into France just before D-Day until their last battle, after which hordes of German soldiers surrendered. As our men traveled deeper into German territory, lines of surrendering soldiers, many still carrying their weapons, were marching the other way to reach an area where they could get rid of their weapons and get away from any of their military leaders. They had also had “enough” of killing and seeing others killed and maimed.

We can all be so proud of these men and what they did for us. Of the many heroes in the book, several stand out but especially Dick Winters. Major Winters seemed to be one of the best officers, soldiers, friend, and father of all the men he served with. He always had time for them and did not give them a hard time when they had troubles, but was there for them. He was a leader among leaders that was loved by all of his men. To my knowledge, Major Dick Winters is still with us in this world in Lancaster, Pa. When you read this fascinating book you too will wish you could meet and converse with him.

Several others played an important part in the course of battles in which this group was involved. You will meet them as you turn page after page of words and stories that will place you beside them in battle, getting wounded, tired, sore, walking when you thought you could not, and many more circumstances over the war years in the European theatre of WW II.
