Getting the Best Out of Other on the Corporate Team Show Them Their Dream Job
By: L Winslow

Many corporate titans and leaders have written books on how they built their corporate executive management teams, survived change management chaos and dominated their industries, while having fun. The work hard, play hard motif was not invented by Jack Welsh, Peter Drucker, Richard Branson, Ray Kroc or Buck Rogers, it was probably made popular by someone like Alexander the Great.

Still, we wonder how did they do it, how did they build those great teams commanding such stellar performance, breaking the norm and accomplishing seemingly impossible feats? Well, not long ago, in a circle of influence strategy session, we discussed this and a few books which are worthy of mention along this line of thinking. The first book we reviewed was;

"Control Your Destiny or Someone Else Will" by Noel M. Tichy and Stratford Sherman - 1993.

Now mind you this book was written a decade before his famous "From the Gut" auto biography, but it gives you some insight into how to make things work and get a team to perform - the dream team of the corporate world running under the leadership and influence of one Jack Welch. In fact the sub-title heading is; "How Jack Welch is Making General Electric the World's Most Competitive Company" and interestingly enough we all know that is exactly what he did isn't it.

Talk about a Dream Job that must have been to be in his inner circle? Most of those under his immediate control became CEOs to other great Corporate American success companies. They all got their dream jobs, didn't they? You see, Jack Welch "broke the intellectual framework of that defines the limits of traditional management" and did a "Frontal assault on the corporate status quo" and so, if you are thinking about a dream job, well isn't that how you would run things, that is if you were in charge?

Another book that our think tank reviewed was;

"Getting the Best - Out of Yourself and Others" by Buck Rogers - 1987.

You may recall Buck Rogers also wrote the book; The IBM Way. Buck Rogers of course became one of IBM's most successful Marketing Vice Presidents. What he learned at IBM and taught others in seminars and corporate management training classes is all in this book. Not every company gets it, maybe more should read this book. If you are the CEO in your company or run a large division then you maybe able to turn your team into a winning team and enjoy your dream job, leading the revolution?

Of course, much of what you do at work, in any job is a lot about you and your personal performance. Do you have what it takes? If so, it is time to go for it, indeed, if you are ready to go to the next step, perhaps we can recommend this book to you also:

"Swim with the Sharks - without Being Eaten Alive" by Harvey Mackay - The Mr. Make-Things-Happen Guy - 1988.

This book sports the sub-heading "outsell, out manage, out motivate and out negotiate your competition" and that about sums it up. Of course, a Mackey puts it so much of winning is about seeing yourself in the winner's circle in your mind first. For those who can read a book and imagine themselves on the winner's podium, more power to them. For the rest of us, we may have to find a company that can let us into our dream job for a day, so we can experience it first hand.
