This
book is a memoir written by Colin McEnroe about his father.
The book begins with the death of his father and continues
chronologically backwards. Colin is one of the "Baby Boomers"
now known as the "sandwich generation". This generation is
caught between caring for their own children and also taking care of
their aging parents.
In the preface Colin McEnroe and his
son, Joey, are enjoying an evening bike ride. They ended up at
the graveside of Colin's father. Here the two have a candid
conversation about death. Joey doesn't like for Colin to step
on the grave. Colin responded by stating that "Bob's not
here. He's not underneath this stone". Joey now wants to
know where he is. Colin stated that he might be in the air, or
in the pine trees. After a little more conversation Joey
states, "Maybe we're born into another body - maybe it's like one of
my video games. You have to get to Level Ten before you get
out."
Colin continues to discuss a few other times that his
father "almost died". He wrote this memoir to understand their
relationship. He also goes into details about his own
relationship with his son, Joey.
This book is based on an
award-winning article. It is a very moving book - one that
will make you laugh and at the same time make you feel a little
sad. There are many Baby Boomers out there and they will
surely understand what Colin McEnroe was going through. This
is a fascinating read and one that you will truly
enjoy!
