The goddess, Miina, with the help of the dragons, has created Kundala.  However, Miina is missing and Kundala and her people have been taken over by the alien V'ornn.   The people feel their savior has come, Dar Sala-at, a messiah promised by prophecy but unlike anyone's expectations.

This book is the third volume of the fantasy epic, The Pearl.  The two previous books are the Ring of Five Dragons and the Veil of a Thousand Tears.  If you start by reading this book first, it will entice you to want to read the other two volumes.

Eric Van Lustbader has done an excellent job of writing a book with so much imagination.  He describes the characters in such detail that you can picture them in your mind.   You will also feel that these are very strong and unforgettable characters.  The plot is complex but one filled with adventure and magic.  Science fiction fans will love this book but you don't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy it.  This book is unique - you have probably never read one like this!  This is one you should add to your reading list!
