THE COFFEE TRADER - DAVID LISS

What happens when a 17th century merchant discovers the power of caffeine and the potential it has to make a fortune?

The story takes place in Amsterdam where many Portuguese Jews came to find the religious freedom they were denied in Portugal.  Miguel Lienzo recently lost everything in a sudden shift in the sugar markets.  As a result, he is how living in his brother's basement.  Miguel is determined to make a comeback in the market.

Miguel is willing to take a chance with a new product called coffee.  He entered into a partnership with a Dutchwoman, Geertruid Damhuis and Miguel is convinced that he has done the right thing.  Miguel must risk everything he values for this venture.   This is the reason Miguel must keep his commodity a secret from his own family and community.  He did not know whom to trust because he was not sure who would plan to scheme against him.  Miguel soon learns about the greed of his competitors and an enemy who would like nothing more but to see his downfall.

David Liss has written an excellent, intricate story.  He does a wonderful job of explaining what it was like to live in the l7th century and ways the competitors dealt in commodities.  The characters are very believable and come to life through the writing of David Liss.  The plot has many twists and turns and a great deal of suspense.  This book is a thriller and one that you should add to your collection!
