GROWING UP KING - DEXTER SCOTT KING

Dexter Scott King is the youngest son of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.  This book portrays his life as he grew up under his father's legacy.  Dexter explains that as a youngster he didn't realize he was growing up in segregation.  As a child he was not aware that he could be turned away from public places or educational institutions.  Dexter faced many problems growing up.  He was later diagnosed as A.D.D.  He failed to get his degree from Morehead College which is where the other King men graduated.  His first attempt to serve as President of the King Center ended after five months and amid board controversy.  Dexter also details conspiracy theories regarding his father's death.

Dexter Scott King does an excellent job of making the reader see that Martin Luther King, Jr. is an inspiration and he truly made a difference back then and will continue to make a difference in our lives.  Dexter gives us an insight on the civil rights movement and it will help you to understand the profound effect that Martin Luther King, Jr. had on this movement.  Dexter points out that not only was Martin Luther King, Jr. a strong leader but he also took the time to be a strong father for his children.

Dexter Scott King is working to protect his father's legacy and to make his dream live on. At the same time, he wants to remain his own man and pursue his own dreams.  This is a worthwhile book to read.
