Brandon Walker is a former sheriff who is now retired.
He is not really happy with retirement. He had no real reason
to wake up in the morning except to play golf. Sooner or
later, that starts to get a little boring. His wife, Diana,
was a successful author of crime books.
An old Indian lady,
Emma Orozco, paid Brandon a visit. Emma told him that her
daughter was murdered some thirty years ago. The killer was
never found.
One day Brandon received a call from
Ralph Ames. Ralph asked Brandon to meet him for
lunch. Ralph told Brandon the story of Hedda Brinker.
She had a single daughter who was murdered during her junior year at
Arizona State University. The case was never solved. It
just so happened that Hedda won the lottery and she did not collect
the first proceeds until after she created a 501 C nonprofit for the
money to be paid into. Called "The Last Chance", its
membership was by invitation only. It consisted of retired
police investigators and forensics experts. These were people
"motivated by the idea of helping fix the unfixable". Brandon
jumped at the chance to join.
Brandon Walker wondered
if his decision was too hasty. It didn't take long for him to
realize he made the right decision. There were two people,
Hedda and Emma, who both lost daughters. Brandon now had a
purpose - these were two cases that needed to be solved.
Does
Brandon and The Last Chance members solve this case? What do
they find during their investigation?
The dust jacket for
this book states "A Novel of Suspense". There is no better way
to describe it! The suspense starts in the first chapter and
continues to build throughout the book. This book is fast
paced and the plot is intriguing. Once you start reading this
book, you won't want to stop. The author does an excellent job
with the characters, especially Gayle who is very complex.
This book is highly recommended and one you don't want to
miss. J.A. Jance has written a real thriller!
