Linda
Hope, Bob's daughter, is responsible for gathering the material to
put this book together. Linda states that when she was going
through the files with Bob's jokes, she came across handwritten
jokes on the back of envelopes and paper napkins.
The book is
divided into sections beginning with jokes about Bob's childhood
where he made fun of himself and other happenings in his younger
years. From here the book continues with each decade of years
from Bob's twenties through his nineties. Several jokes are
listed in each section. There is a brief paragraph or two at
the beginning of each section explaining what was happening in the
world at this time. From here, we can see how the jokes
related to the time period.
It is very interesting to see how
history influenced many of Bob's jokes during each time
period. Bob poked fun at many presidents and their
wives. However, he never did it in a nasty way - it was just
funny. From Bob's jokes during each time period, we get an
idea of how he felt about politics and many other things that were
happening at that time.
Bob Hope will turn 100 year's old on
May 29, 2003. We thank him for the many years of entertainment
he has provided to us and especially to our troops. As his
daughter states in the book, "Thank you Dad for all the memories" -
we have to say the same - thank you Mr. Hope for all the years of
laughter you have given to the world! This is a great book to
read. We all need to laugh and this book will certainly make
you do that.
