BOOK REVIEW

CHEAT AND CHARMER - ELIZABETH FRANK

This is a story of two sisters, Dinah and Veevi.  With good reason, Dinah grew up jealous of her sister Veevi.  Veevi was beautiful and captured much attention.  However, due to Veevi's marriage to Stefan Ventura, a Bulgarian filmmaker and Communist, Veevi's home became involved in a great deal of political activity.

Dinah was subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee which made a threat to ruin her husband's career if she did not cooperate.  No cooperation meant her husband's name would be placed on the "Hollywood blacklist".  Will Dinah name names including her sister Veevi?  After all, she has to save her husband and at the same time keep her beautiful house.  If she does name her sister, will she be able to live with the consequences?

As we read this book we come to feel that Dinah is a snitch and we really don't like her very much.  However, we soon find out that Veevi is no angel either.  What skeletons does Veevi have in her closet?  Well, believe me, there are quite a few!

Twenty-five years in the making, the author does an excellent job of writing this story.  What makes it intriguing is the period of history that is blended in with the story.  It also tells us a great deal about what went on in Hollywood at the time.  This novel includes many elements that make a book interesting - love, family, and jealousy.  This book is well written and makes for a very good read.  This is one you should add to your reading list.
