Sportswriter, John Feinstein, wrote this book about Bruce
Edwards who has been the caddy for Tom Watson for over 40
years.
Bruce Edwards gave up his chance to attend college
when he had a chance to go on the pro golf tour. It was there
that he came to know Tom Watson and that has been the story ever
since.
The book goes into detail about many of the
tournament games played by Watson.
In 2003, Edwards
was engaged and soon to be married. When he could not grip the
golf ball on a cold morning in October, he and Watson became
concerned. They became more worried when Edwards began to slur
his speech. After tests at the Mayo Clinic, Edwards was
diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. The doctors gave him
one to three years to live.
Through this all, Feinstein
states that Edwards kept his sense of humor. Family and
friends stood by his side to give him the support he
needed.
This book is a moving tribute to Bruce Edwards.
Whether you are a sports fan or not, you will enjoy the book.
As I was just finishing this review, I happened to check the news
and read that Bruce Edwards died today, April 8, 2004, during the
week of the Masters Tournament! Bruce Edwards helped bring a
name to the "guy who carried the golf clubs" for the pro
golfer. His face was recognized just as well as the famous
person he was working for. Add this book to your reading list.
John feinstein does an outstanding job of telling the Bruce Edwards
story!
