Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle receives a letter from Dr. Bernard Gussmann, a
psychiatrist who had treated Doyle's father years ago and has since
died. The letter contains some information about another
meeting with Doyle that no other person would know.
Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle had an obsession regarding the spiritual world.
He was often ridiculed for this belief. The letter is an offer
Doyle finds hard to refuse. It is a chance to enhance his
beliefs by communing with the dead. However, Dr. Gussman has a
request of Doyle to complete first. He must arrange for any
one of three people designated in the letter to visit an imprisoned
woman awaiting hanging for murder. Each of these three people
was at one time or another a patient of Dr. Gussman.
Is this
letter sincere? How could it be from the doctor who has been
dead for some time? Is someone playing a hoax on Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle? Is someone trying to embarrass him again?
In
seeking the truth, Sir Arthur asks Charles Baker, an American
reporter with the Associated Press to help him find more information
about the letter. Charles Baker served in military
intelligence during World War I.
What do the two
discover from their investigation? Is Dr. Gussman dead or
alive?
