Duffy Dombrowski is not your average social worker. When he's not counseling sex addicts and drug users in a town outside of New York City, you can find him crooning Elvis tunes, getting "Schlitzed" with his quirky friends, or fighting ex-Olympians in the boxing ring. Our less-than-perfect hero occasionally uses his mean left hook on pimps and other lowlifes, too. But at least he cares about his clients. When Walanda, a schizophrenic, crack-addicted prostitute, is murdered, Duffy pledges to take care of her basset hound "Allah King" and find her missing stepdaughter, Shony. He's horrified to discover the teenager is ensnared in a web porn ring-a vile enterprise that enslaves crack-addicted women and their children. On the verge of losing his job-and his life-Duffy also gets mixed up with a creepy doctor with ties to Pakistani extremists. Still, nothing will stop this conflicted Robin Hood from trying to save Shony and foil a terrorist plot.

Duffy Dumbrowski: The Realest Detective You'll Ever Meet:
"On The Ropes" put me in the passenger seat alongside Duffy Dumbrowski, the social worker turned part-time detective, as we investigated the the trappings of the many dysfunctional members of society. We did not just encounter and explore those members who make their dysfunctionality clear and present, but also those who do not -- and maybe, for good reason. Duffy's wit was also a nice compliment to the whole ride. Dumbrowski left no stone unturned; he would investigate his own mother if he suspected... more info
Buy it, read it then buy yourself a Basset!:
If you love crime thrillers with humour thrown into the mix the Duffy Dombrowski novels are a great choice... The characterization is brilliant - the hero is a social worker cum heavyweight boxer, a man of great principles. When one of his clients dies a suspicious death he takes in her orphaned Basset hound (a former Nation of Islam bomb sniffing dog) and vows to uncover the circumstances of her death. Hilarity ensues between Duffy, his bureaucratic ball-breaking boss, bar room buddies and the... more info
It's Society's Fault:
The first 2/3's of the book is devoted to the main character's job as a social worker. We learn he is too cool to fill out any paper work. I guess the idea is he is too committed to helping people to be tied down by The Man's bureaucratic norms. The only problem is he never actually does any good. He just recounts the various problems of his wards. Not to worry, their burdens aren't their fault it's all our fault. Free will and self determination are Neocon myths. If reading about a social worker who... more info
Well I heard the news, there's good writin' tonight:
What do you call it when you can't put a 336 page book down but are then upset with yourself because you finished it so quickly...leaving you wanting more, more, more? I just call it damn good writing. Thank you for the free short stories (& audio versions!) to help quell the need for more Duffy & Al adventures. -BillyD
