Author Publicity:
Before and After a Book is Published

For the majority of authors, the work that goes into completing a book is often written off as a labor of love. Regardless of passion though, completing a book isn’t the only job an author has to tackle. In fact, the average author usually becomes a jack-of-all-trades, acting not only as a writer, but also a researcher, editor, and proofreader too!

If that wasn’t hectic enough, many publishers in the industry leave a lot to be desired as well. Instead of assuming responsibility for the majority of publicity-related tasks, many publishers expect authors to handle the bulk of their publicity themselves. Why are publishers hired if they’re not doing a complete job? As unfortunate as it may be, many authors have stepped up, finding that DIY publicity is actually quite easy nowadays.

To elaborate a little more, I am going to discuss a few popular tactics authors are using before and after completing their books.

Before Being Published

While it may seem odd, promoting an upcoming book before being published is actually quite effective. Think of it like a new business. You wouldn’t just open a new business randomly without generating a little buzz first. Otherwise you may find your grand opening is lacking one crucial component for success—customers! The same concept can be applied to authors.

The Internet has become an author’s best friend for publicity. Many authors will build a personalized website or blog centered on their writing career. With that in mind, it is important to note that a domain name should not be based upon the title or slogan of your upcoming book. Instead, opt for a domain using either your actual name or your pen name. By doing this, you’re ensuring that the website is a viable publicity tool for any of your publications instead of just one specific title.

Another online asset at your disposal is social media. Facebook, Twitter, and a plethora of other social media platforms have become virtual gold mines for publicity. By utilizing social media outlets, authors create a direct link between author and reader. This link creates a more personal connection, allowing an author to respond to readers’ questions, comments, and criticism. Moreover, an author can generate anticipation by posting excerpts and tidbits from an upcoming book.

After Being Published

After a book has been published, the marketing and promotion typically becomes more intense. Now that there is a tangible product being promoted, publicity becomes significantly more important. As an author, you want to maintain any existing readership, but also attract as many new readers as possible. You never know, your book may be the subject of Oprah’s next book club.

While the Internet has completely revolutionized book sales for authors, one of the best publicity tactics is to think local. In other words, focus more on local book stores. This is one of the best ways for friends and family members to buy your book. Depending on how popular the book is, many book stores will even host book signings too. A book signing is a perfect opportunity to connect with fans, and if you want to take it a step further, try having little trinkets or promotional goods to give away too. Sites like Quality Logo Products specialize in personalized products that can be customized to boost brand loyalty and establish an image.

Another great publicity opportunity can be found through book clubs. As an author, it is probably safe to assume that you have friends who either attend a book club or host their own. If this is the case, offer to make an appearance at the club on the condition that club members read your book. Another option is to embark on a book tour. However, a tour can be highly expensive and can be considerably less effective as far as publicity goes. Most authors do book tours simply because they’re enjoyable.
