Ice Cold by Tess GerritsenIce Cold begins with Maura Isles, Boston Medical Examiner, heading to Wyoming for a medical conference. Maura is disappointed in her romance with Daniel Brophy and thus decides to be impulsive and go on a ski trip with a colleague from the conference which is totally out of character for Maura. She takes off with Doug, his teenage daughter Grace, and his other two friends, Arlo and Elaine in a Suburban. Things start to go bad when the GPS sends them down an isolated road during a snowstorm.

When they have an accident and wind up in a ditch, they take shelter in a deserted village called Kingdom Come thirty miles from the nearest town. There are about twelve houses that appear to have been abandoned quickly with meals interrupted, cars in the garages, and pets left alone to die of apparent starvation. While trying to get back to civilization with one of the abandoned vehicles, they have another more serious accident and Maura has to head out on foot to try to get help.

Meanwhile back in Boston, Daniel sets off a search for Maura when she is not answering her cell phone and fails to return on her scheduled flight. Initially the police are not real excited about her disappearance even when Daniel, Jane Rizzoli, and her FBI agent husband, Gabriel, arrive to help with the search. They are leaning toward Maura having just taken off for some fun with another man since Daniel and Maura weren’t on the best of terms when she left. Then the police come upon the charred remains of the suburban with five bodies in it. Daniel, Anthony Sansone and Jane Rizzoli are devastated when they are informed that Maura is dead. Right after Maura’s funeral, Jane is advised of another discovery and Jane, Gabriel and Anthony head back to Wyoming to a dangerous investigation into the secrets of Kingdom Come and the community around it.

Tess Gerritsen has created another page turner in her Rizzoli and Isles series. I wouldn’t advise picking up Ice Cold unless you have the time to sit and read it cover to cover. You will not want to put it down once you begin. I look forward to many more books in this series.
