Bug Goes Through the Maze by K.M. Groshek

Reviewed by Caryn St. Clair

mazeIn this adventure, readers find Bug, the friendly little Volkswagen Beetle, exploring a corn maze. As with the other books in the series, the story is told in a snappy rhyme, the text presents a problem for Bug to overcome and there is a lesson for young readers to learn.

While out for a drive, Bug discovers a corn maze and stops to explore. The first thing he learns is, “yes, this is a maze but a labyrinth it’s not.” The difference is explained simply and to the point so that even a relatively young child should grasp the difference. Better yet, this is just the sort of information that preschoolers absorb like a sponge and then love to spring on unsuspecting siblings and favorite aunties. Through the trial and errors of seeking his way through the maze, Bug also learns quite a bit about persevering thru difficulties and making the best of decisions made.

But the underlying lesson, the main theme of the book, is to get out and explore the world. You’ll never know what things you are missing, what people you’re not meeting and what fun awaits you if you don’t get out there and take a chance on life. To quote Bug, “so get out the door and try something new, there’s adventure out there merely waiting for you.”
